Differences and common points between ITIL & CobIT
Role of CobIT
The COBIT framework primarily pursues order and security, and thereby ensures the IT governance in the operation of the IT services. IT Service Management according to ITIL orientates itself solely on customer benefits and efficiency. The achievement of the business goals while simultaneously fulfilling internal and external specifications is a fundamental prerequisite for ensuring the success of a company in the medium and long term.

Tolerance with regard to incorrect behaviour and carelessness has clearly fallen among legislators, shareholders and customers. Supervisory authorities at home and abroad demand error-free processes. Comprehensibility of the IT activities and their measurability is demanded. The management of the operational risks must therefore in the interest of the company and its stakeholders. As shown by many negative examples from the past, some companies have not survived due to the lack of, or insufficient control mechanisms. After all, Basle II and the Sarbanes Oxley Act (SOX) arose from the lack of care when dealing with operational risks.

Today, COBIT is becoming increasingly important in this connection. This Best Practise framework supports the control of all IT processes and is primarily aligned towards revision aspects and the safeguarding of order.
Role of ITIL
ITIL, on the other hand, describes a systematic, professional procedure for the management of IT services. The library emphatically places the importance of the economic fulfilment of the company requirements at the focus of interest.

The necessary prerequisite here is the indispensable readiness for change in the direction of customer and service orientation. IN many companies, this requires an adaptation of the prevailing service culture. With the help of ITIL, a clear terminology will be created in the Service Management area, and communication should thereby be simplified.
Common points
It is no longer sufficient to simply implement Best Practise. The synergy of the two frameworks now lies in the fact that the somewhat formal control goals of COBIT are compared with the framework of ITIL, which is aligned towards suitability and flexibility, and determines which specific revision requirements, such as comprehensibility, are to be fulfilled. Through this connection, the specifications for the strategic alignment and increase of efficiency of the IT Service Management can be skilfully synchronised with the specifications of the revision.

The two frameworks will develop further and will move towards each other even more. The international standard ISO 2000 creates the bridge here. On the basis of ITIL, the two organisations itSMF and BSI (British Standard Institute) have developed this clearly measurable standard, and have thereby created the possibility of having the conformity, effectiveness and efficiency of the individual control goals of IT Service Management certified.
